Chartogne-Taillet

In the 7th century, the winemakers of the villages located in Merfy drew upon the heritage of the Benedictine monks from the Abbey of Saint-Thierry. From generation to generation, the winemakers of Merfy, together with the abbey, shaped the viticultural landscapes of our slopes, meticulously separating each plot according to its geological origin, soils, subsoils, etc. Names were subsequently inscribed on the village maps and became the "lieux-dits" (place names), which now nourish the roots of the vines growing there. The lineage of winemakers in our family dates back to 1490 with Nicolas Taillet, and to Fiacre Taillet in 1540. By 1700, a second Fiacre Taillet, a scholarly winemaker, was writing his memoirs recounting his life's work, as well as all the important events of the village, the family, and his profession. The Chartogne-Taillet family continues this tradition of writing and craftsmanship inherited from this winemaking legacy. Today, their actions are guided by this transmitted knowledge, and they adapt the winemaking practices of the Benedictines to the new dynamism of the Champagne region. Preserving the flavors of this place, they create a wine that will soon sparkle with effervescence. There is no need for certification, except for that which will allow the aromas of this terroir to be captured in the bottles.
