Sylvain Cathiard & Fils

Domaine Sylvain Cathiard et Fils is a legendary winery founded in the 1930s. Its founder gained experience working at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and with François Lamarche, after which he acquired vineyards near Vosne-Romanée. In 1969, the estate was managed by Sylvain’s father, André. Sylvain joined the business in the late 1980s, and in 2006, when his son Sébastien began working, the current name was established. The estate owns prestigious plots in Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, and Chambolle-Musigny. A particular pride is the 0.17-hectare plot in Grand Cru Romanée-Saint-Vivant, which produces approximately 900 bottles in the best years. Until 2019, the vineyard area was 5 hectares, all cultivated using organic methods without herbicides and pesticides. Sylvain Cathiard emphasized: «We are winegrowers, farmers, whose main value is the land. We work on it with passion and love». Since 2011, the estate has been primarily managed by Sébastien Cathiard, under whose leadership the estate’s reputation has grown significantly. By 2020, the area had expanded to 12.5 hectares thanks to new plots in Hautes Côtes and Gevrey-Chambertin. In the cellar, Sébastien adheres to minimal intervention: careful sorting, cold maceration, and local yeasts. The wines are aged for 18 months with varying percentages of new oak for different categories. Since 2000, bottling has been done without fining or filtration. 99% of the wines are exported to the USA, the UK, and Asian countries. Sébastien aims to make them accessible to more connoisseurs while maintaining the highest quality and family traditions.
