Château Pajzos

Château Pajzos is not just a winery, but a symbol of the revival of the great traditions of Tokaj, where the historical heritage of Hungarian winemaking meets the high standards of French winemaking craftsmanship. This estate is one of the leaders of modern winemaking in the historic Tokaj-Hegyalja region, whose wines are known throughout the world. The modern history of Château Pajzos began during the height of the “Tokaj renaissance” — the period after the fall of the Iron Curtain, when foreign investment poured into the region. The idea of creating the winery belongs to the legendary Bordeaux winemaker Jean-Michel Arcaute, known for his role in the revival of Château Clinet in Pomerol. In 1991, the French investment group CFGVT (Compagnie Financière des Grands Vins de Tokaj), headed by Jean-Louis Laborde, acquired the legendary Pajzos vineyard covering 107 hectares. The company itself was registered on November 25, 1992, and this date is considered the official birthday of Château Pajzos. The Pajzos vineyards were already known back in the 18th century. In 1772, during the world’s first official classification of the Tokaj vineyards, the Pajzos plots were classified as Grand Cru (first class). The arrival of French investors marked a new era, bringing capital and modern technology, which made it possible to restore this terroir’s former glory.
