Robert Schätzle
Schloss Neuweier is one of the most ancient and well-preserved moated castle complexes in all of Germany. The history of this majestic castle and its associated winery dates back to the 12th century. Winemaking has been an integral part of the estate’s history from its very beginning — the princely dynasty of von Bach, the first owners of the castle, were actively engaged in wine production. After the death of the last member of the family in 1538, the property passed to the heiresses — the daughters of sister Katharina von Bach. Since 2012, the management of the castle and winery has been in the hands of the Schetzle dynasty. Robert Schetzle, a biotechnologist and oenologist with an engineering background, continues the centuries-old traditions of the estate. Coming from an ancient winemaking family in Kaiserstuhl, he first received education in biotechnology and then, in 1999, decided to follow his family’s calling. Robert graduated with honors from the oenology department of the prestigious Victor Segalen University in Bordeaux. During his studies, he gained invaluable experience working at renowned wineries, including Dr. Heger, Zind Humbrecht, Marc Kreydenweiss, Clos du Val, and Rollan de By. He then spent the next six years working as a consulting oenologist at VDP wineries in the Baden and Rheingau regions. In 2012, Robert Schetzle became the owner of not just a vineyard, but a true gem of the Baden Wine Route — the Schloss Neuweier winery, which boasts a history spanning 850 years.
