Porseleinberg

Porcelainberg is an ambitious project established by Mark Kent, renowned for his work at Bukenhutskloof Winery. His objective was to create premium wines from Cabernet, Syrah, and Chocolate Block varieties. When Bukenhutskloof began facing supply challenges due to increasing competition, Mark Kent decided to acquire his own vineyards. A pivotal moment came when he met a farmer owning a 10-acre plot. Initially, the plan was to purchase the harvest, but the farmer suggested selling the entire farm — thus, Porcelainberg was founded in 2009. The name originates from deposits of kaolin clay used in porcelain production (porcelain meaning porcelain, berg meaning mountain). Mark Kent, a fan of Rhône Valley wines, converted the vineyards from Pinotage to Syrah and Grenache. The estate is managed by Cally Louw, who prefers to be called a farmer rather than an oenologist. The best harvests are used for producing flagship organic Porcelainberg wines, while part of the crop goes to Bukenhutskloof wines. The label design reflects respect for tradition, utilizing a 1940s font, emphasizing the connection to the local winemaking history.
