Ornellaia
The estate was founded by Marquis Ludovico Antinori in 1981, then sold to the Mondavi family, legendary producers of California wines. Today, the main owner of the estate is the ancient Florentine house of Frescobaldi. Tenuta dell’Ornellaia is the only Italian estate that is the joint creation of a whole galaxy of iconic personalities. Its unique style of a luxurious and velvety blend, Ornellaia, was developed under the supervision of Michel Rolland, one of the great luminaries of Bordeaux. The godfather of Ornellaia is considered to be André Tchelistcheff, the legendary oenologist of Russian origin, who defined the main priorities of the unknown terroir. His merits also include the creation of the wine Masseto from Merlot, which over a few vintages achieved the status of a global icon, earning it the nickname “the Italian twin of Pétrus.” As a result, Masseto became the first Italian wine to be distributed through the special Place de Bordeaux system, alongside the great châteaux and other exceptional wines of the world.
