Mommessin

The history of the estate is deeply rooted in southern Burgundy for over two centuries. In 1865, Jean-Marie Mommessen founded a wine house named after him, establishing its office in the small town of Givry, which once belonged to the Cluny Abbey. Since then, the company's emblem features a symbolic key to the town. The monks of Cluny worked for centuries on nearby vineyards, developing their own traditions, which became the foundation of Mommessen Winery. Over the decades, the family business thrived, and in 1932, it became the sole owner of the renowned Clos de Tarte estate, strengthening its position in central Burgundy. The winery’s modern success and high-quality wines owe much to Sylvain Pitiot, a talented and unique figure who rose from vineyard worker to one of Burgundy’s most esteemed oenologists. In late 2014, Pitiot stepped down from his role (but not from wine!), and today Jacques Devauges serves as the new technical director—an energetic and highly capable successor to his mentor.
