La Biancara di Angiolino Maule
La Biancara di Angiolino Maule is not just an Italian winery; it is a true monument to natural winemaking. Its founder, Angiolino Maule, is a cult figure, a pioneer and the leading ideologue of the "pure wine" movement in Italy, as well as the creator of the influential VinNatur association.
Angiolino Maule and his wife Rosamaria founded the winery in 1988. Remarkably, they were not hereditary winemakers. For 12 years, the couple ran a family pizzeria and only afterward fully dedicated themselves to their long-standing passion—viticulture.
Their philosophy, which they transferred from the kitchen to the vineyards, is simple and radical: "Nothing Added, Nothing Removed." From the very first days, they rejected chemicals in the vineyards and began using natural methods, which was a real challenge to the system in the late 1980s.
In the mid-1990s, Maule became one of the first in Italy to start making wines without added sulfur, and by the end of the decade, without filtration either. He honed his skills by learning from the "godfathers" of natural winemaking—Josko Gravner from Friuli and Giovanni Valentini from Abruzzo.
The heart of the estate is located in the commune of Gambellara in the Veneto region, on the volcanic hills between Verona and Vicenza. Today, the total vineyard area is about 18 hectares, of which 15 are owned and 3 are leased. The altitude of the plots ranges from 90 to 260 meters above sea level.
