Kleinood
The history of Boschendal Farm began in 1688, when Frenchman Jacob de Villiers acquired the estate. For over 300 years, the property has remained in the hands of the de Villiers family. In 2000, management of the winery passed to Gérard de Villiers and his wife Libby, who rebranded the estate and gave it a new name — Kleinood (meaning «something small and precious»). Kleinood is a compact wine estate covering 12 hectares, with 10 hectares dedicated to vineyards and 2 hectares occupied by olive groves. The farm is located in the picturesque Bloulipypen Valley at the foot of Helderberg Mountain. In the early 2000s, the couple conducted a detailed soil analysis, revealing the presence of four distinct types of clay soil. Based on this data, the vineyard was divided into 23 separate blocks, each of which underwent deep plowing and special preparation. The favorable combination of terroir, sunlight, and humidity proved ideal for cultivating Syrah, Mourvèdre, Roussanne, and Viognier varieties. The Kleinood team pays special attention to creating a sustainable ecosystem in their vineyards. All prunings are mulched and composted together with crushed grape skins and stems, which helps minimize pesticide use and maintain soil health. Even in small details, the estate maintains a special approach: wine labels are printed on an antique press, manually torn, and attached to each bottle, adding an extra touch of authenticity to the products.
