Domaine Ponsot

The history of Domaine Ponsot began in 1872 when William Ponsot, returning from the Franco-Prussian War, acquired vineyards in Morey-Saint-Denis. Demonstrating foresight, he expanded the holdings to include prestigious plots of Clos de la Roche and Clos des Monts-Luisants, where in 1911 he planted Aligoté — a rare variety at that time. In 1920, the domain passed to the founder’s nephew, diplomat Hippolyte Ponsot, who significantly expanded the vineyards with the support of his brother Henri. A revolutionary step was the start of bottling wines under their own brand in 1934 — only a few did this at the time. Hippolyte actively participated in obtaining AOC status for Burgundy vineyards and later passed the business to his son Jean-Marie. Today, the estate is managed by Laurent Ponsot, preserving family traditions. Modern production is based on biodynamic principles, with Pinot Noir and Aligoté remaining the main varieties. Domaine Ponsot wines have gained international recognition and are highly valued at auctions.
