Domaine de la Grange des Pères
Before the emergence of Domaine de la Grange des Peres, the winemaking landscape of Languedoc was a patchwork of numerous cooperatives and ordinary wines of mediocre quality. However, the region’s history was forever changed thanks to a humble yet brilliant winemaker — Laurent Vaylet. His journey to recognition began in the 1980s when fate brought him together with legends of French winemaking. Gérard Chave from the Rhône Valley and Jean-François Coche-Dury from Meursault not only shared their invaluable experience with him but also passed on sacred cuttings from their finest vines. It would seem that attempting to grow atypical grape varieties for the region on young vines is a path to inevitable failure. However, Laurent Vaylet, as if challenging fate, went against all the rules. He intentionally limited yields to unprecedentedly low levels, creating tiny batches of concentrated, rich wine. This daring experiment brought stunning success — the wines captured the hearts of the most discerning critics. Today, Domaine de la Grange des Peres is not just a winery but a symbol of the region’s revival. Its first vintage made history as the most expensive wine of Languedoc, setting an impressive record at an online auction in 2019.
