Bodegas Vega Sicilia

The history of Vega Sicilia began in 1848 when Toribio Lequanda acquired 2,000 hectares of land. His son, Eloy Lequanda, laid the foundation for winemaking by bringing grape vines of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Pinot Noir from Bordeaux. As early as 1876, his brandy received recognition and the status of a royal family supplier.A turning point came in 1904 when Domingo Garamiola initiated wine production using Bordeaux techniques. In 1915, the legendary wines Vega Sicilia and Valbuena were created, initially produced as exclusive gifts for the aristocracy. The wines gained worldwide fame in 1929 at the exhibition in Barcelona.A new stage of development began in 1982 with the arrival of the Álvarez family, which modernized production and expanded the vineyards. Today, the estate boasts 250 hectares of vineyards in Balbuena de Duero. The revolutionary achievement of this bodega lies in creating innovative blends where local Tempranillo skillfully intertwines with noble Bordeaux grape varieties. It is noteworthy that Vega Sicilia gained recognition even before the Ribera del Duero region received the status of Spain’s leading wine-producing area in the 1980s.The winery produces only in the best harvest years, remaining true to tradition and guaranteeing consistently high quality of its wines.
