Bodega Catena Zapata

Bodega Catena Zapata was founded in 1902 by Italian immigrant Nicola Catena, who arrived in Argentina in 1898 in search of a better life. Settling in Mendoza, he planted his first Malbec vineyards—back then, this grape was considered ordinary, but Nicola believed in its potential. His son, Domingo Catena, carried on the family business, expanding production. However, the true revolution came with Nicolás Catena Zapata, Nicola’s grandson, who transformed the family winery into a global leader in winemaking. In the 1980s, Nicolás—an economist by training—returned from the U.S. with a bold vision: to create world-class wines. At the time, Argentine wines were seen as simple and mass-produced, but he was determined to change that perception.Nicolás pioneered the study of altitude’s influence on grape quality in Argentina. He acquired vineyards in Altamira and Adrianna, situated at 900–1,500 meters above sea level, where the cool climate and dramatic temperature swings lent the wines freshness and complexity.Though Malbec was then considered a "workhorse" grape, Nicolás proved it could produce Grand Cru-level wines. His experiments with oak aging and terroir elevated Argentine Malbec to unprecedented heights. The Catena family didn’t just raise the prestige of Argentine wine—they redefined Malbec’s potential, turning it from a humble variety into a national treasure. Today, Catena Zapata is synonymous with quality, innovation, and passion for winemaking.Intersting fact: The winery’s architecture is inspired by Mayan temples, symbolizing the connection between earth and sky—a core philosophy behind their wines.
