Bat Gara

A small boutique winery in an absolutely idyllic and energetically charged location near Alava in the Basque Country emerged from the union of two concepts of understanding Txakoli — autochthonous varieties and terroir — as applied by the two founders of the project: restaurateur and winemaker José Cruz Guinea and viticulturist and oenologist Tchema Gochi. José and Tchema are passionately committed to the renaissance of Basque Txakoli wine, demonstrating through their vibrant wines the potential of Atlantic winemaking. Bat Garra cultivates not only autochthonous grape varieties Ondarrabi Zuri and Ondarrabi Zuri Zerratia but also Riesling, experimenting with blends on their own 6 hectares in Lesama. In Basque, Bat Garra means «We are one», just as the name of the wine Somos Uno — «We are one», «we are a whole» — translates from Spanish. The philosophy behind this phrase is not only about «the two of us as friends who together opened a progressive winery»; it is about being one with our people, being one with our planet, we are all one, and in the unity of humanity lies strength.
