Adega Algueira

The story of Adega Algueira is a vivid example of the renaissance of heroic winemaking in the Galician region of Ribeira Sacra, specifically in its most prestigious area, Amandi. It all began in 1979 when the family company acquired the Carballo Cobo vineyard. At that time, it was nothing more than abandoned, half-destroyed terraces on a steep slope. Fernando González Riveiro and his wife Ana invested considerable effort into the restoration, manually rebuilding stone walls and planting new vines, step by step bringing their dream to life. The journey to success was long — their own wines under the Algueira label only appeared in 2000. The name Algueira (meaning «chestnut») is a family nickname, referring to the tall stature of the González-Riveiro family members. The estate’s wines, from the simplest to the most complex, represent true eclecticism. Each one harmoniously combines elegance of style, distinct terroir expression, juicy fruit, and an impressive mineral character. All wines are created naturally, without unnecessary manipulations — only from healthy grapes grown with particular risk. The estate practices biodynamics, although this is not the main focus.
